Her passion for volunteering led to her position as a Girl Scout leader and board member. She served as Neighborhood Chairman over all Raintree Council troops in four area schools. As an active member of the St. Mary’s Hospital Auxiliary, she held many positions. In 1975, as board president, she began a St. Mary’s Scholarship Program for nursing students from the area that wished to pursue higher education following high school.
Dee and Charlie founded and built “Browning Funeral Home” on Diamond Avenue. Dee participated by finding the plat of land in 1954 to sewing the curtains, to giving the funeral home a warm and welcoming ambiance with her flair for decorating, gardening, writing and supporting her husband and daughters in helping mankind.
With a vision into the future, Dee helped Charlie with their gift of “The Genealogy of Evansville over the Last Century”. She delved deeper into her own family and this helped her dream of becoming a Daughter of the American Revolution come to fruition. She became an active member of the society by implementing the placement of eight historical markers within this city dedicated to our forefathers.
Along the way, Dee became a grandmother, welcoming her ten grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. She took each grandchild shopping for their birthday and Christmas presents, enjoying this special individual time together. Her love for history, appreciation for education and her wonderful stories were shared during these times.
Like an artist painting a canvas, Dee was a volunteer with a vision, who could see the entire picture. Active with numerous organizations, Dee generously gave her time and talent enhancing each organization with her vision and trailblazing ideas. Dee’s devotion to family, dedication to history and enthusiasm for life will be forever remembered by those who knew and loved her.
