Funeral will be held Monday at 4 p.m. for Dr. W. H. Barnett, 87, pioneer West Texas physician, who died at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at St. Ann Hospital.
Paul Witt will officiate at the funeral to be held at Laughter-North Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Dr. Barnett resided at 1830 North Third St. He was born Nov. 23, 1866, at Gun Town, Miss., and moved as an infant with his parents to Kaufman County, near Terrell.
He was a charter member of the Taylor-Jones County Medical Society. He moved to Coleman County before the turn of the century and practiced in Coleman and Runnels Counties before moving to Abilene.
In Coleman County he married Edna McDavid on May 6, 1891. They had three children, all now deceased. Mrs. Barnett died Feb. 17, 1954.
Dr. Barnett graduated from Terrell High School and attended medical school in Louisville, Ky. He received his MD degree from the University of Tennessee.
Answering the call of the ill was a lifetime work for Dr. Barnett. He closed his downtown office more than two years ago but when those who had built up faith in him called, he never refused to aaswer.
Friends in Abilene who remember Dr. Barnett's most active practice say he helped hundreds through sicknesses and "never bothered about a dollar afterwards."
But his practice didn't stop with healing the physical body. Many came to him with other problems they met in life.
"I guess they came to me like they would a minister," Dr. Barnett once said. "I suppose they looked upon their family doctor in about that light."
Dr. Barnett recently received a plaque from his alma mater, the University of Tennessee. The plaque honored Dr. Barnett for "50 years loyally, and effectively having served his community..."
He practiced medicine more than 60 years.
Survivors include two grandsons, Bob Barnett of Austin and Dr. W. L. Barnett of Cleveland, Tex.; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Barnett of Eden.
Pallbearers are John Ferrell, A. M. Harrison, J. D. Perry Sr., C. S Brown, Tom Lewis and Deter Hardwicke.
