He attended Logan City Schools, Utah State Agricultural College (now Utah State University) where he received a Bachelors in Civil Engineering, he furthered his education at Leland Stanford University with a Masters of Business Administration.

Lou loved America. His education was interrupted with entrance into the U.S. Military, first in the United States Army Air Corp, where he proudly served in World War II, later in the United States Air Force, where he served for 22 years on active and reserved duty. He received his commission as Second Lieutenant from Yale University and then as an Assistant Production Control Officer at Tinker Air Force Base, on a project to modify the B-29 bombers, including the Enola Gay. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after serving as Commander of the Air Force Reserve Unit for Cache County.

Lou worked as both a surveyor and as an independent engineer. Since 1950 Louis has owned and operated Hickman Land Title Company with his mother, Margaret C. Hickman, in Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming. He was constantly working to integrated modern technology into this industry. He served as President, Vice President, Secretary, and as a board member on state and national Land Title Associations. He always loved meeting and helping many, many people.

He was awarded the 1988 Small Businessperson of the Year. He was active in many civic organizations, serving in the Logan Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he received the National Outstanding Chairman Award and their Distinguished Service Award. He also served as Vice President of the Cache Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the Industrial Development Committee for several years. He was Chairman of Logan City’s Planning and Zoning Board. He was elected President of the Logan Rotary Club, Men’s Club, and an active member of the Cache Valley Antique Automobile Club. He especially enjoyed driving his cars in the various parades throughout Cache Valley.

He was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving for 22 years as Clerk for nine Bishops and for 13 years as the Logan Stake Clerk. He most enjoyed being a teacher of the Gospel Doctrine class.

Lou married Rosemarie Gibbons on September 23, 1969 in the Logan Temple and they were blessed with seven children, all of whom served in one capacity or another in the various offices of Hickman Land Title Company, which provided employment for many people over the years, and helped countless people with their title needs. He had a lifelong love of music. In his youth he played drums in dance orchestras throughout northern Utah and southern Idaho with many bands including his own orchestra. Later he also sang in the Town Singers with his wife.

Lou always looked forward to his daily visits with his friends at the Blue Bird Coffee Club. He has always been young at heart and has kept up with friends and family. As an avid reader, he always enjoyed learning, he would often retreat to the peacefulness of Logan Canyon with a good book. Above all he was a man of character and thoughtful service, he set a great example for family, friends and associates.
