Daniel A. DeBaeker, age 75, of Norfolk; passed away Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2005, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.
Visitation was held from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at the Home For Funerals in Norfolk.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Friday; Sept. 16, 2005, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Norfolk. Rev. Timothy Lange officiated the service.
Interment was in the Prospect Hill Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the American Legion Post #16 and VFW Post #1644 of Norfolk.
Home For Funerals of Norfolk was in charge of arrangements. Daniel was born April 26, 1930, at Scotland, SD, to Gustave and Dorothy (Crennan) DeBacker. His family moved to O'Neill in 1940. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1948.
On June 14, 1951, he entered the U.S. Navy and served until May 3, 1955. Daniel was stationed in San Diego, CA. While he was in the Navy, he married Donna Davis on Jan. 3, 1953, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in O'Neill. The couple lived for a short time in San Diego and following his discharge from the Navy, they returned to Nebraska.
In 1955, Daniel began his career with JC Penney's in Columbus as an assistant manager. He was transferred to Minneapolis, MN, where he held the position of merchandise manager. He was promoted to store manager of the JC Penney's Store in West Point. He finished his 25 year career with JC Penney's at the Missouri Valley, Iowa, store.
In 1975, Daniel and Donna opened the DeBacker Family Store in Neligh, which they owned and operated until 1982, when they moved to Norfolk. He began his employment in November 1992, with the Norfolk Housing Authority as the FSS coordinator/housing inspector until his retirement. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish and archdiocesan choirs.
Daniel is survived by his spouse of 52 years, Donna; children and their spouses, Michael DeBacker of Kansas City, MO, Mary and Kim Carlson of Albian, Beth and Chris Geilenkirchen of Norfolk, Thomas DeBacker of Los Angeles, CA, and Bernadette and Tom Buchholtz of Norfolk; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Diane and husband Gene Hendrix of Denver, CO.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.
