He served twice with the Army in Vietnam, and attained the rank of first sergeant. He served for six years, and retired from active duty in 1975. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He also was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Expert Rifleman Badge, and the Bronze Star.
