David "Dave" Mullin, 83, of Newcastle, Maine, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 18th, after battling Myelodysplasia. Dave was born on February 15, 1932 in Newark, New Jersey to his loving parents, Margaret and Dr. Raymond J. Mullin. He graduated from Seton Hall Prep and received his BA from St. Michael's College Colchester, Vermont in 1953. As president of his class, he forged a life-long relationship with the institution and the priests of the Society of Saint Edmund. He was proud to receive the Alumni of the Year Award in 2013. Following college, Dave enlisted in the U.S. Army, attended Officer Candidate School and rose to the rank of First Lieutenant. Joining his family to live at the Jersey Shore, Dave met and fell in love there with Margie Sheehan. They were married in 1959, and shared a beautiful life over the next 23 years raising their two daughters in Fair Haven, New Jersey, until Margie's death in 1982. Upon retiring from Newsweek Magazine in 1989, after a long and successful career in advertising and sales, Dave moved to Maine. In retirement, Dave felt privileged to serve as President of the Lincoln County Hospice. He also enjoyed the opportunity to serve on the boards of Round Top Center for the Arts and the Skidompha and Waldoboro Libraries. Dave was an avid golfer and a die-hard Patriots fan. He thoroughly enjoyed nature, (especially the ocean and body surfing) and loved the adventure of travel with family and friends. While a man of strong opinions, he had an open mind and a warm compassionate heart. He had a penchant for storytelling and jokes (often corny to his grandkids' delight) and loved to make others laugh - which he did heartily and often. He was blessed with many dear and supportive friends, including members of the Sheehan and Johnson clans. Dave was a romantic who loved poetry. He had a fondness for driving convertibles, top down, speakers at full volume. As his grandkids describe "He was fun!" But the most precious gift that he shared with his family and friends was his simple and steadfast faith. Dave was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Margie; his sister, Regina Judith Skeffington; and brother, Dr. Raymond J. Mullin, Jr. He is survived by his sisters, Margaret "Peggy" Evans of Red Bank, New Jersey and Patricia "Patsy" Bransome of Fairfax, Virginia; his daughters, Mary Haynes (Paul) of Fair Haven, New Jersey and Judith Scheininger (Frank), of Eatontown, New Jersey; his grandchildren, whom he adored, Claire and Monica Haynes and Justin and Luke Scheininger; and his long-time, loving and loved companion, Alice Quinlan, of Newcastle, Maine, who attended to him with such great and gentle care in his last days, for which his children are forever grateful. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 30th from 10-11am at St. Patrick's Church in Newcastle, Maine; followed by a Mass of the Resurrection at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to Miles and St. Andrews Home Health and Hospice, ℅ Development Office, 35 Miles Street, Damariscotta, ME 04543. Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main Street, Damariscotta, ME.
