Abbot Patrick Barry, O.S.B., a Benedictine monk at Ampleforth Abbey for over 80 years, professed solemn vows on Sept. 23, 1939, and was ordained a Catholic priest on July 22, 1945. He served as Headmaster of Ampleforth College from 1964 until 1980. In 1984 he was elected abbot, and retired from office in 1997. He also served as Chairman of the Union of Monastic Superiors in England. For the next 12 years, he lived at St. Louis Abbey in St. Louis, Missouri, and worked in Chile with the Manquehue Apostolic Movement. He returned to Ampleforth at age 91. A skilled calligrapher and a prolific author, his books include "St. Benedict's Rule: A New Translation for Today" (1997), "A Cloister in the World" (2005), and "Wisdom From the Monastery: The Rule of St. Benedict for Everyday Life" (2006).
