Graveside services for George R. Abernathy, Jr. will be held Tuesday, April 2, 2002 at noon at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery under the direction of Delta Funeral Home in Cooper.

Mr. Abernathy was born in Athens, Aug. 11, 1925 to George Ross and Mary Lou Jernigan Abernathy.

He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II.

He was a college history professor at the University of Texas, Rice, Alabama and North Carolina Universities.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Irene Dodson.

Survivors include four brothers, Herbert Abernathy of Cumby, Donald Abernathy of Cooper, Bobby Abernathy of Fort Worth and Dan Abernathy of Abilene; a sister, Floy Little of Sealy; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in Cooper.
