ATCHISON, Kan.- Rev. Conrad Pillar, O.S.B., 79, a monk at St. Benedict's Abbey, Atchison, died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at a Kansas City, Mo., hospital. He had suffered a massive stroke on Jan. 1.

Rev. Pillar had been a chemistry teacher at St. Benedict's College and later at the Benedictine College, both of Atchison, for 35 years.

After retiring from teaching in 1985, he became a pastor of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Sabetha, Kan., and St. Augustine Catholic Church, Fidelity, Kan. He served both churches until retiring in 1997.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on April 2, 1921, he was a graduate of St. Benedict's College with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. He earned a master's degree in chemistry. He earned a master's degree in organic chemistry and a doctorate in that field from the University of Notre Dame.

Rev. Pillar became a monk of St. Benedict's Abbey in 1946. when he spoke solemn monastic vows. He was ordained a priest in 1947, after completing theological studies at the abbey.

He had spent 10 summers from 1959 to 1977, doing research in chemistry programs of the National Science Foundation at several state universities and other agencies. For about 10 years, beginning at St. Benedict's College, he was chairman of the chemistry department. He completed his chairmanship duties at Benedictine College in 1985.

Surviving: three brothers, Michael, Seven Hills, Ohio, Edward, Deming, N.M., and Donald, Parma, Ohio; three sisters, Ann L. Wagner, Bedford Heights, Ohio, Cathy Ashby, Solon, Ohio, and Jean Sullivan of Las Vegas.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Abbey Church, Atchison.
Burial: Abbey Cemetery, Atchison.
Vespers for the Dead: 7 p.m. Friday, at the church.
