Tom worked for the Illinois State Fire Marshall office in Springfield. He had worked for the West Frankfort Fire Department from 1959-1987 and was Fire Chief from 1974 till his retirement in 1987. He was also Chief of Police in West Frankfort in the 1970's.

Tom was a member of the First Christian Church in Herrin, the Coal Belt Fire Protection Association of Southern Illinois and the Elks and Masonic Lodge 567 both of West Frankfort. He was a graduate of FCHS and attended SIU.

He married Barbara Gray on Dec. 20, 1991 and she survives.

Other survivors include one daughter, Desiree Barber of Columbia; two sons, Thomas Carl of Tallahassee, Fla., and Brian of West Frankfort; also one granddaughter; one brother and three sisters; one step-daughter and one step granddaughter, and two step great-granddaughters.

His mother and one brother, Ronald preceded him in death.
