NEWPORT NEWS - Elsie White Abbott, 90, passed away Oct. 27, 2008.
She was a master gardener who-throughout her life-nurtured her faith, her marriage, her family, and her friendships with the same care she tended her gardens-with extraordinary devotion and selfless love.
Elsie was born in Dover, N.C., on Jan. 3, 1918, to Lowell Dank White and Wealthia Sauls White. She grew up on the family farm outside Fort Barnwell with her two sisters, Cora and Florence. In 1937, she moved to Raleigh to attend business school and work for the North Carolina state government. She met Frank Abbott Jr., a shy young engineering student from North Carolina State. Frank became the love of her life; their marriage, on Aug. 3, 1940, would be the beginning of a blessed and enduring love that spanned 57 years on earth and now reaches into eternity.
Frank and Elsie built their home in Warwick-on-the-James in 1948, where they raised their children, Diane and Tom. Here, Elsie would nurture her family and create her beautiful gardens. She and Frank became members of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in 1955. For over 50 years Elsie grew her faith in this church: she taught Sunday School, participated in many Presbyterian Women's Circles, and studied with her beloved friends in the Chapel Class.
Elsie cultivated life-long friendships in the Wayside Garden Club, Warwick-on-the James Homeowners Club, and other local civic organizations. Many of her friendships spanned more than six decades-and every one of her friends she continued to love and care for until the very end of her life.
Elsie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Frank; her parents, Dank and Wealthia White; and her sisters, Cora Harper and Florence Dougherty.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Lanny Hinson of Smithfield, Va.; her son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Linda Abbott of Edenton, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Adrienne Hinson Evans, Ceili Marie Abbott, and Casey Thomas Abbott. She leaves behind two nephews and their families whom she dearly loved, Earl Harper and his wife, Carol, of Kinston, N.C., and Lowell Harper and his wife, Carole, of Crewe, Va.
A celebration of Elsie's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, in the chapel of Hidenwood Presbyterian Church in Newport News; a reception will follow at the church. Burial will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park.
