Samuel McCoy was the son of Daniel McCoy & Margaret "Peggy" Taylor. He married Benina "Nina" Phillips about 1840 & they resided in Pike County, KY, the place of his birth. Samuel was the brother of Randolph & Asa Harmon McCoy of Hatfield McCoy Feud fame. Samuel's son, Samuel Jr. (Big Sam or Squirrel Huntin' Sam) also played a pivotal part in the feud.
During the Civil War, Samuel & his brothers were the embodiment of "a family divided". Samuel & older brother, John, would both give their lives for the cause they believed in, on opposite sides of the War of Rebellion. Brother, Asa Harmon was killed by bushwhackers in Jan 1865, after mustering out of the service the previous month.
