Rev. Monsignor Kevin James Heyburn, former Pastor of St. Joseph Church in Rowena and St. Boniface Church in Olfen, passed from this life after a heart attack while reciting the rosary on May 7, 2001 in San Antonio.

Msgr. Heyburn was born August 10, 1922 at Burrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England. He was the older of two sons born to Mary Margaret O'Sullivan Heyburn and James Heyburn.

He attended Catholic grade schools in New York, Missouri and Texas and graduated from St. Peter and St. Joseph School in San Antonio. He attended St. Anthony's Seminary High School in San Antonio and graduated from Price High School Seminary in Amarillo in 1940.

Msgr. Heyburn's college and theological education was completed at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary in ST. Louis, Missouri and St. John's Seminary in San Antonio. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in San Antonio on May 27, 1948. His assignments included Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Amarillo; Holy Name Church in Happy; Our Lady of Lourdes in Andrews; Sacred Heart in Abilene; St. Joseph in Rowena; St. Ambrose in Wall; St. Mary's in Odessa; St. Thomas in Miles; and a second assignment as Pastor of St. Joseph in Rowena. On October 1, 1992, he retired as a pastor, but continued serving the Rowena and Olfen communities until 1998 as the Pastor Emeritus, when failing health required him to move to Padua Place, a retirement home for Catholic priests in San Antonio. Msgr. Heyburn also served five years on active duty as a Chaplain in the United States Air Force.

Msgr. Heyburn as Vicar General of the Diocese of San Angelo from 1970 to 1979, was in charge of the construction of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Andrews in 1959 and Central Catholic High School in Abilene in 1963. He served as the Director of Pro-Life Activities for the Diocese of San Angelo from 1976 until he moved to Padua Place.

Msgr. Heyburn is survived by John and Anne Heyburn, his younger brother and sister-in-law, and their four children – Kevin Heyburn of Austin, Maureen and David Myers of Richmond, Paul and Kristin Heyburn of Houston and Bridget and Brooke Williams of Dallas.

A Vigil Service with rosary will be held at the Cathedral Church of the Sacred Heart at 7 PM Thursday, May 10 with Msgr. Fred Nawarskas presiding. Bishop Michael Pfeifer, OMI will be the Celebrant and priests of the Diocese of San Angelo will concelebrate the Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, May 11 at 10:30 AM in the Cathedral Church. Msgr. Timothy J. Murphy, Vicar General of the Diocese will be homilist. Interment will follow in the Priest Section of Calvary Cemetery.

Members of the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree will serve as an Honor Guard from the vigil, throughout the evening and the Funeral Mass.
