Prominent Attorney, Former State's Attorney and Circuit Judge. He was the son of Jacob and Margaret (Noll) Schaefer, natives of Germany who first settled in St. Louis. In 1852 Jacob Schaefer moved his family to Madison Co., Ill., remaining there until 1858 when he moved them to Lebanon, Ill.

Judge Martin Schaefer married Miss Lottie Weigel of Lebanon on November 11, 1879. Six children were born: Elmer, who drowned while skating at Lake Christine in 1898; Edna, wife of M. Lester Harris, East St. Louis; Leota, wife of G. Locke Tarlton, Signal Hill; Corinne, wife of Ernest H. Gass, Belleville; Edwin M. Schaefer, Omaha, Neb.; and Dr. Otho E. Schaefer.
