AGE: 85 ? Metuchen

Frederick H. Bechtold, 85, of Metuchen died on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011 at the Mary Anne Hale Pavilion of Haven Hospice at JFK Medical Center in Edison. Born in Philadelphia, PA on November 25, 1925, he resided in Linden and Rahway before moving to Metuchen in 1952. He graduated from Rahway High School in 1942, and joined the US Navy. He was a "tin can" sailor serving in both World War II and the Korean War. Fred was a stationary engineer with General Motors Corporation in Linden, before retiring in 1982. He was an avid gardener for 57 years and was well known for his Jersey tomatoes.

He was predeceased by his wife, Anna E. Bechtold and his son, James R. Bechtold. He is survived by his three children, Robert F. Bechtold of Metuchen, Thomas H. Bechtold and his wife, Gail of Bethlehem, PA, and Maryanne E. (Bechtold) Clark of Allentown, PA.; his four grandchildren, Daniel Bechtold, Steven Bechtold, Jessica Bechtold and David Bechtold, and three great-grandchildren, Anthony, Julianna and Daniella. He was also predeceased by his second wife, Maria Ciavatta Bechtold and is survived by his close friend, Madeline Huggard. He is also survived by his extended family and close friends as well as his beloved Willow Road neighbors.

Services will be held on Thursday, February 3, 2011 at 11:00 AM at the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home, 568 Middlesex Ave. (RT 27) Metuchen, interment is at Hillside Cemetery in Metuchen. Visitation is Wednesday 2-4 & 7-9 and Thursday, 9:00 until 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Mary Anne Hale Pavilion c/o of JFK Medical Center Foundation 65 James St. Edison, NJ 08818. To send condolences please visit costello-runyon.com.
