William Riley and Thomas Wiley Shewmake/Shoemake were born twins to William and Nancy Shewmake/Shoemake 2 Dec 1861 in Weatherford, Texas. Thomas Wiley was named after an Uncle, Wiley Thomas Shoemake.

When William Shoemake enlisted in the 5th Texas Mounted Volunteers, Confederate States Army, his name was misspelled as Shewmake. According to pension records, he was told he could not change the spelling on his official records, thus some of the offspring used the spelling Shewmake vs. Shoemake.

William's tombstone in Round Timber Cemetery, Seymour Texas, reads W. M. Shoemake, 84 Yrs Old. It is believed the name given to the stone engraver was Wm for William but it was scribed W. M. instead.
