Gerald C. "PJ" Oswalt, Jr., 87 of Altoona died Saturday afternoon July 25, 2015 peacefully at his residence surrounded by loving family.
He was born October 17, 1927 in Juniata, Altoona a son of the late Gerald C., Sr. and Iona M. (Burge) Oswalt. He married his beautiful wife Ann L. Taylor on December 23, 1946 in Altoona. She preceded him in death on January 15, 1988.
Surviving are three children, son James C. Oswalt (Kathy Stanley) of Hollidaysburg; daughter Kathleen M. Beasom and her husband William of Warren, OH; and son Gerald R. Oswalt and his wife Mary Jo of Altoona; eight grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren; and two brothers, Jack R. Oswalt of Hollidaysburg and Robert M. Oswalt and his wife Donna of Altoona; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gerald was preceded in death by a sister Althea M. Chilcote and brothers Huber C. Oswalt, Gary L. Oswalt and William L. Oswalt.
Gerald retired from the U.S. Army in 1972 after twenty-five years service where he attained the rank of staff sergeant. Following his service in the U.S. Army, Gerald was employed as a receiving clerk and caster by Fry Metal retiring from there in 1992 after 18 years service.
His true joy in life was being surrounded by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, fishing, watching cowboy movies, bowling and golfing.
Better known as "Pappy O", his hugs and smiles will be sadly missed by many, Heaven has a new Angel.
Friends will be received from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday July 29, 2015 at Myers-Somers Funeral Home, Inc., 501 Sixth Avenue, Altoona where a funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Peggy J. Bonsell officiating. Interment will be made at Blair Memorial Park, Bellwood with military honors.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675.
