This account of William's Civil War experiences accompanied his wife Eliza's Texas Civil War pension application:

William Henry Anderson "was a member of the 5th Regiment, Jenkin's Brigade, S. C. V., and served two years on the tented field and two years as a prisoner at Camp Chase, Ohio, and Rock Island, Ill. While at Camp Chase he and six other prisoners dug their way out; but his friend, Hunnicut, was too big for the hole, and William H. Anderson remained with him to make the hole bigger, the others effecting their escape in safety. Anderson and Hunnicut, by traveling at night and ‘laying by' in day time, finally arrived within five miles of Gen[.] Lee's Army, where they were met by spies in Confederate Uniform, and captured and returned to Camp Chase. They were afterwards removed to Rock Island. Here they were starved to emaciation and lost their hair as if from a spell of sickness. The goodness of a lady who visited the prisoners and sympathized with them, helped to save Anderson's life– many of the prisoners died of starvation. She gave him both food and clothing. He always blessed her name, which we regret to have forgotten. He was paroled at the close of the war after twenty-three month's imprisonment."

The Adjutant General's Office in Washington D.C. summarized his record in 1927 as follows (also enclosed in Eliza's pension application):

The records show that one William H. Anderson, Pvt. Co. A, 2nd Regt. South Carolina Cavalry, C. S. A. enlisted April 13, 1862, at South Carolina.

Muster Roll fort July and Aug. (latest on file) shows him absent, captured July 17, 1863.

His name appears on a list of Prisoners confined in Military Prison at Wheeling, Va. July 21, 1863. Age 24 years. Sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, escaped Sept. 20, 1863. He was received at Rock Island Barracks, Ill., from Camp Chase, Ohio, Jan. 17, 1864, captured at Putnam Co., Va. Sept. 30, 1863. He took the Oath of Allegiance, subscribed and sworn to at Rock Island Barracks, Ill., and released June 16, 1865. Residence: Cashville, Spartanburg Dist., S.C. Age. 26 years[;] Complexion, light; Hair, auburn; Eyes, gray; Height, 6ft.½ in.
