On October 19, 2014 he left the country for what was described as a medical check-up in London. There was concern about his health as his trip to London was only five days prior to the 50th anniversary celebration of the Zambian Independence Day. Just nine days after leaving Zambia, he died at King Edward VII Hospital; his wife, son and other family members were with him at the time.
