Helen Jean (Eakins) Calcote, 87, died Saturday, July 4, 2015, at the home of her son in Amarillo.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, in Citizens Cemetery outside of Clarendon, Texas, in Donley County. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.

Helen was born in Amarillo June 5, 1928, the only daughter of Cecil and Thelma (Maple) Eakins. Cecil worked for Phillips Petroleum Company and shortly after her birth, the family moved to Bartlesville, OK, where the company headquarters were located. She grew up in Bartlesville where she graduated high school in 1946. She then attended Oklahoma Baptist University in Shawnee, OK, for two years before returning to Amarillo to work for Phillips Petroleum in the Rule building downtown.

Helen married James Glendall Calcote on April 23, 1950, in Bartlesville. The couple lived in Amarillo and Borger in the early years of their marriage until 1965 when they moved their family to Mangum, where Jim served as general manager and president of Mangum Brick until 1981. While in Mangum, they raised their two sons and Helen worked at Altus Air Force base and then for the U.S. Department of Agriculture with the Farmer’s Home Administration. She enjoyed bowling during their years in Mangum.

In 1981, Helen and Jim moved to Mineral Wells, TX, where he was general manager of the Mineral Wells plant of U.S. Brick. While in Mineral Wells, Helen was a member of the Palo Pinto General Hospital Auxiliary “pink ladies.” In 1984, the couple returned to Amarillo where she and Jim opened Tascosa Brick, with Helen serving as vice president, secretary and treasurer.

Helen was a very caring person, always doing for others rather than herself, and spoiling her grandchildren. Her cousin, Jody, said, “People often say the only child is selfish, but Helen Jean was the most unselfish person I’ve ever known.”

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, and husband, James G. Calcote, in March 2013. Survivors are two sons: James G. Calcote Jr. (J. C.) and wife, Anna Dunn, of Amarillo; and Kevin Calcote and wife, Jeri, of Mineral Wells; and three grandchildren: Nicole Calcote, Columbia, S.C.; Kenyon Calcote, Norman, OK; and Chad Calcote, Phoenix, AZ; and a cousin who was like a sister to her, Jody (Maple) Malouf and husband, Buddy, of Dallas.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 P.M. at the funeral home on Tuesday.

The family suggests memorials be to the Eveline Rivers Project, 314 South Jefferson, Amarillo, TX 79101; Martha’s Home, 1204 SW 18th Ave, Amarillo, TX 79102; or Ronald McDonald House, 1501 Streit Dr, Amarillo, TX 79106.
