James Bernie Duke was born on January 21, 1916 to James Henry and Callie Louise Duke in Kaufman, Texas. He was one of ten children. He spent his boyhood years in the Kaufman/Scurry area helping out on the farm his father sharecropped that provided them a meager living. He had a free spirit and was very fun loving. Stories are still told about a motorcycle with a sidecar he owned which likely forever changed the Texas landscape. He and his brother, Guy, were also in demand at that time providing music for parties and get-togethers.

Bernie, as he was most well known, married for the first time at age 19 to Marie Croxton; but the marriage only lasted about one year. However, that union did produce a son, Royce, whom Bernie loved very much. Not long after that, Bernie rededicated his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He soon met his second wife of 66 years, Marie Dial. He liked to refer to her as his "little darling". Their marriage and relationship was undoubtedly a great example of a Godly union as they spent their lives devoted to one another and the Lord through selfless servitude.

Not long after Bernie met Marie they began working full time in the ministry. It is impossible to detail the accomplishments they made working for the Lord. Bernie and Marie served as pastors and built numerous churches. They held countless revivals, street services, jail services and other types of evangelistic ministry. Bernie was often heard on the radio for many years in the Dallas area on KSKY radio station. They preached at hundreds of churches and only the Lord knows the many souls that came to know Christ as a result of their efforts. Bernie never retired, he only "refired". He was known for preaching at the nursing home where he passed and offering special prayer to the residents and staff when the need arose.

Bernie and Marie had three sons: Timothy, Philip and Gary. Royce and Phillip have both passed away. Timothy has been estranged from the family for many years for reasons known only to him. Gary resides in Noel, Missouri where he and his wife, Gina, attempt to continue to carry the gospel torch through pastoral and evangelistic ministry.

Bernie has eight grandchildren: Emmett, Steve, Cindy, Dallas Marie, Pam, Lance, Sharon and Marlinda, numerous great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Marie went to heaven on April 28, 2009, and on April 4, 2011 at 10:20 p. m. Bernie went to join her. One can only imagine the glad reunion that ensued at that moment and is still occurring this very moment.

Visitation will be held at 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, 2011, at Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Home. Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the funeral chapel under the direction of Anderson-Clayton Bros. Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Gardens. Condolences may be made at andersonclaytonterrell.com.

After requesting the plot number be added to James' memorial, his memorial was transferred to my care. Though I am not related to James, I do not mind tending to his Find A Grave memorial, but would not be hesitant to transfer to a family member should they make the request to maintain it.
