Capt John Neal "Hutch" Hutchison, Jr was the pilot of B-17 Aircraft 42-31370 (The aircraft had not acquired any nomenclature or nose art) on mission 66 of the 385th Bomb Group, 550th Bomb Squadron returning from a successful bombing mission on Diepholz Aircraft Depot in North West Germany.

Leonard USAF (Ret) by Newsfoto Publishing Company, San Angelo, Texas No publication date "Hutch and five members of his crew were flying the last mission of their operational tour before returning to the states"

B) Hardlife Herald Newsletter of the 385th Bombardment Group Association Volume 31 Number 2 July 2014. A copy claimed dated 18 February 1944 of a Western Union Telegram from Hutchison to his mother "AM OK ONE TO GO LOVE JOHNNY = JOHN HUTCHISON"

C) Final Flights by Ian McLachlan published by Patrick Stephens Limited 1989 states the crew "Veterans of 24 Missions" Page 84. (Maintainer of this memorial believes this is a false statement)

D) Eight Air Force Bomber Stories, A New Selection by Ian McLachlan Sutton Publishing Limited 2004 Page 26
"On 21 February 1944, Capt John N. Hutchison and crew were to fly their 25th mission, the completion of their tour" (Maintainer of this memorial believes this is a false statement)

E) LOSSES of the US 8th and 9th AIR FORCES Volume 2 by Stanley D. Bishop, John A. Hey By Bishop Book Productions 2007 states "Captain Hutchinson (Last name spelling error) and his crew had just completed their 25th mission" (Maintainer of this memorial believes this is a false statement)

Aircraft 42-37963 collided with 42-31370 just minutes from the safety of base with the result of 21 servicemen killed.
