The Rev. J. Harmon King died at his residence on Nov. 21, 1997. He was the son of the late Jesse J. and Lana Edwards King and was survived by his wife, Alice, two children and four grandchildren.
He had served The Shawmut Nazarene Church for 25 years and the past seven years as associate pastor for Lanett Church of the Nazarene.
He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II under Gen. George S. Patton.
Preacher King was always very dedicated to visiting patients in all the local hospitals and ministered to their spiritual needs regardless of denomination. He was the first person to receive the "Outstanding Young Man of the Year" award in the Valley. He also received the "J. Harmon King Humanitarian Award" from the Valley Medical Association. He was instrumental in raising one million dollars for George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital.
Preacher King was a warm, wonderful, compassionate man and I loved him as most everyone did that had the privilege of knowing him. I guess he either married, baptized, blessed or buried almost everyone on the Smith side of my family. He had visited our homes, sat at our kitchen tables and offered great comfort to those in need along with a prayer of blessings.
I know you are in the Heavens with your Savior. God Bless you.
