L.J. Cowart enlisted as a private soldier on 21 Dec 1863 in Co. C, 3rd Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee. He was discharged at Appomattox Court House on 9 Apr 1865. His grave marker shows his date of birth as 1845 but his death certificate and census information list his birth year as 1844.
