While on leave, on May 25, 1918, he married Myrtle Beatrice Barbour, in the Fairvalley Methodist Church, he had to then return to Niagara, where he was training for overseas. He lost his brother David overseas, his unit had just arrived, allowing him to attend his brother's funeral in England
