The Dalles Times-Mountaineer
The Dalles, Wasco, OR
The funeral of the late Mrs. P. Craig will take place from the Catholic Church in this city tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
Mrs. P. Craig, who has been sick at her residence in this city for the past seven weeks, died this morning about 6:30 o'clock. She was aged about 75 years, and has been a resident of The Dalles since 1852. For many years Mrs. Craig has been feeble, and was usually confined to her bed, with apparently nothing ailing her except weakness from old age. The lamp of life had burned low, and when death came it was simply a putting out the light from the natural exhaustion of the forces that sustained life.
Mrs. Craig was a very estimable lady, and, during her long residence in The Dalles was known to everyone for her many charitable acts. Wherever there was suffering or sickness, and when possible to render aid, Mrs. Craig was always among the first to proffer assistance.
She leaves one daughter. Miss Katie Craig, and three sons, Hon. R. Monroe, of Lewiston, Idaho, and Charles and Frank Craig of this city.
After the above was written we ascertained the following data: Miss Ann Elizabeth Bulger was born in St. John New Foundland, Feb. 6, 1820, and was first married to Mr. James Monroe, who was killed in 1839, in the Seminole Indian War in Florida.
She was afterwards married to Mr. Polhemus Craig, and arrived at The Dalles in September, 1852. Her husband was hospital steward in the Mexican War, and Mrs. Craig served as matron of the hospital in the Florida and Mexican Wars. Mr. Craig died in this city 17 years ago, on the same day of the month as his widow's decease took place.
Mrs. Craig was the mother of seven boys and one girl, R. Monroe, William Edward, Joseph, Henry, George Augustin, Charles, Katie Alice and Frank Polhemus Craig, and four of these are still living.
