There were three Lecompton, Kansas citizens who were killed in Quantrill's raid on Lawrence, Kansas on August 21, 1863; James O'Neill, brothers, Frederick and William Klaus. James was originally buried in the Bald Eagle Cemetery, Lecompton, KS. and was the only Quantrill victim buried there. Frederick and William Klaus were buried on their family farm.
Later, a son died and the original tombstone was replaced with a stone large enough to allow for names of other members of the family. The O'Neill's second tombstone was one that was moved to the southern boundary of the property when a rock crusher company purchased the land. The original tombstone was found and is now preserved at the Territorial Capital Museum, Lecompton, KS.
The son's name was David C, b 09 March, 1853; d 07/22/1867. (Note he was just 5 months old when his father was killed.) James' spouse was Alice Victoria (MNU), b 06/24/1830. Her name was on the second tombstone, but there was no death date, because she was not buried here, but in Colorado. After O'Neill was killed she married a man with the surname BROWN (FNU) and moved from Lecompton.
