He was born at Ladock, Cornwall, on the 4th of December 1895 and was the son of Richard Henry Henwood of St Column Minor, Cornwall (1871-1948) and Kate Henwood nee Mitchell of St. Michael-Penkevil, near Truro, Cornwall (1868-1934), who had married on the 18th of November 1893, at the Church of St Michael, St Michael Penkivel.


His parents had met whilst in-service at Tregothnan House, near St. Michael-Penkevil, for the Boscawen family. His father was a Groom, whilst his mother was employed as a 'Still Room Maid'.


His siblings were:

  1. Isabella Henwood (1894-1985).
  2. Reginald Edwin Henwood (1894-1968) - who emigrated to Michigan, USA.
  3. Ned Kingsland Henwood (1900-1979).
  4. Ethel May Henwood (1905-1993).
