Father of Pope Benedict XVI (1927-2022), as well as of Maria (1921-1991) and Georg (1924-2020). Born on March 6, 1877, at Rickering near Deggendorf (Lower Bavaria). Since 1902, Joseph was a rural policeman in the service of the Kingdom, later the Free State of Bavaria, near the border with Austria. A devout Catholic, since the 1933 takover by the Nazis, he was in constant conflict with the régime, as he often refused to obey their orders to persecute opponents. As a result, he was often harassed by the Nazi hierarchy. In order to avoid sanctions, he often had to change posts, a change of residences described by his son, Pope Benedict XVI, in his book "Aus meinem Leben."
