John Otto Kratli was born in Indiana. His father was born in Switzerland and his mother in France.

He fought in the Spanish American war and in World War I in the twelfth engineers company. He was badly injured in World War I by a poison gas attack and never fully recovered. In the 1930 census under occupation it states, "Total Disability".

John was a member of the Masons and the Shriners.

He was in the Army 3rd Engineers in 1908 and participated in the building of the Panama Canal. Prior to that he was a member of the band in the 3rd Engineers.

He Married Sicily Irene Lee sometime between 1920 and 1930. They had no children.
