Memorial services for Sarah Destimona Brazil Brookshire, 101, of Temple will be 1:00 P.M., Saturday, March 14, 2014, at St. Paul’s United Methodist with Philip Shuler officiating.

Mrs. Brookshire was born in Bend, Texas on September 24, 1913 to Richard Allen and Beatrice Sullivan Brazil. She graduated from high school in Carrizo Springs, Texas in 1931. She attended Mary Hardin Baylor College in Belton before entering the Scott and White Training School for nurses, graduating in 1937. She received a certificate in Public Health Nursing in 1939 from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee and was employed by the Fort Worth City Health Department for eight years. Sarah married DeWitt Slaughter in 1949 and moved to Temple. After DeWitt was killed in action in Korea, Sarah went back into Public Health as a supervisor with the Williamson County Health Department. She married John W. Brookshire in Georgetown on December 14, 1957. Sarah retired from the Health Department after 20 years of service. After John’s death in 1989, she returned to Temple. Sarah was an active member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, teaching Sunday school and participating in UMW work.

Mrs. Brookshire was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, DeWitt Slaughter and John Brookshire; brother, Donovan R. Brazil; and sisters, Martha Lorraine Groves, Mary Dale Fournier of Temple.

She is survived by sister, Hellon Beth Catlett of Omaha; brother, W.T. Brazil of Pleasanton; and many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and grand nephews.
