Leo V. Marks, age 98, of Fort Smith, Arkansas, died Tuesday, December 29, 2009. He was born September 27, 1911, in Marks, Mississippi, a son of Henry H. and Virginia Denton Marks of Marks and Memphis, Tennessee. He attended Gulf Coast Military Academy, Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and Memphis University School. He was retired from the Southwest Times Record and Arkansas-Oklahoma Gas Company. He was editor of several small town newspapers, wrote poetry, spent much of his life trying to write the next Great American Novel, and above all was passionate about humane treatment of animals. He was a resident of Fort Smith for 68 years, a member of Immanuel Baptist Church for 60 years, a volunteer at St. Edward Hospital, and a Merchant Marine.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his dear wife of 56 years, Zola Folsom Marks, and his beloved brother, Louis Denton Marks. Surviving are his two daughters, and son-in-law; 1 granddaughter, 2 grandsons, and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Frances Fraser Marks of Memphis, Tennessee, a nephew and niece.

Funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Monday, January 4, 2010, at Fentress Mortuary, 1805 North "A" Street in Fort Smith. The family will visit with friends immediately following the service, with private burial on Tuesday.
