Katherine Waring Hughes Silver, 90, of Greenwood, MS, affectionately known as "Sis" by friends and family, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2014. Services will be at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 5,2015, at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Vicksburg, MS. Interment of the ashes at Cedar Hill Cemetery will follow the service.
The Reverend Patrick Sanders, her grandson, will officiate.
Visitation will be in the church Parish Hall from 1 pm until time of the service.
Sis was born on September 26, 1924, to Katherine Dornbusch Waring and D.P. Waring, Sr. in Vicksburg, MS. She grew up in Vicksburg, one of eight children, four loving brothers and four beautiful "Waring girls". Sis earned her nickname from
her three older brothers who delighted in their first sister. The eight siblings and their spouses remained great friends throughout their life. The Warings were longtime members of Crawford Street Methodist Church in Vicksburg.
Sis graduated from Carr Central High School in 1942 and loved helping organize the reunions of her amazing class. She attended All Saints Episcopal School, MSCW and the University of Mississippi, where she was a member of Chi Omega Sorority. In 1945, she married Paul James Hughes. They made their first home in Hot Springs, AR, where Paul began his career as a civil engineer. They moved to Yazoo City, MS
in 1951, then to Greenwood in 1962. Sis and Paul had a fun filled life of raising children, playing golf, and entertaining. They shared a love of God, family,
friendships and Ole Miss. They belonged to the Methodist Church, until joining the Episcopal Church of the Nativity of Greenwood in 1968.
Sis was a delightful mother, hostess, friend and sister, always making friends wherever she went, whether it was at WalMart or on a golf course. At WalMart, she was first to greet the greeters. In golf, she was excellent at pitching and putting, and always ready to teach an innocent bystander tricks of the trade. She made at least two hole in one's, and won over eight club championships in Yazoo City and
Greenwood. She also loved playing golf in Vicksburg and Lake Bruin, LA. She was a wonderful letter writer, keeping friends and family abreast of all the latest news and
expressing love and encouragement. She loved cooking and was famous for her scrumptious pralines and her fun duck suppers. Sis had a wonderful sense of humor and her beautiful blue eyes and smile would light up any room or soul. She often reminded us of Lucy Ricardo, especially attempting to be a Cub Scout and Brownie Den mother, frolicking in the Yazoo City follies, and madly dashing to Eckerd's for last minute gifts on Easter and Christmas mornings. Sweet Sis's kind spirit and compassion for others were an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She had a
love for children beyond measure, and was always a source of unconditional love and constant support to her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
After her husband Paul's tragic death in 1979, she returned to Vicksburg, where she became a communicant of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church. Every Sunday, It took her about 5 minutes to return to her pew after communion, stopping along the way
to hug those on the end of the rows. She married Jerry Silver of Vicksburg in 1983.
Sis and Jerry enjoyed traveling, golfing, and relishing their respective families and many friendships. Their camp at Lake Bruin was always full of friends and fried fish.

Sis is survived by daughters, Pam Powers (Charles) and Nancy Wood, of Greenwood, MS, son, Reed Hughes (Cyndi) of Senatobia, daughter-in-law, 1. Melody Hughes; grandchildren, Amy Williams (Dan), South St. Paul, Minnesota, Kara Doiron (Phillip), Ocean Spring, MS, the Rev. Patrick Sanders (Jennifer), Nesbit, MS, Reed Hughes, Jr., Memphis, TN, Kelli Ray Hughes, Senatobia, MS, Taylor Wood (Mary Howard), Chicago, IL; and great grandchildren, Miles, Mark

She is also survived by her sisters, Mary Frances Denton of Jackson, MS, Nancy Redmond (Tom) of Tampa, FL, her brother, Jimmy Waring (Ida), sisters in law, Lee Waring (D.P.), Laura Waring (Albert), and Liz Waring (Bobby), Ruth Hughes Dowling and Maxie Hughes Dawson.
In addition to her parents, Sis was preceded in death by her husband, Paul James Hughes, Sr., her second husband, Jerry Charles Silver, her infant daughter, Katherine Waring Hughes, her son, Paul James Hughes, [r., her brothers, D.P., Bobby and Albert Waring, and her sister, Betty Waring Aden(Bunny), her sisters in law, Betty Jean
Waring (D.P.) and Nell Waring (Bobby).
