Sammie Motley Coats, 93 of Mesquite, Texas, entered into her eternal home on December 24, 2014.
Born on September 9, 1921, in Grand Saline, Texas, she was the daughter of Joe and Ruby Box. Sammie was a housewife, farmer, mother to a blended family and a registered nurse, graduating from nursing school at age fifty. She served as a PTA president and president of Mesquite City Council of PTAs for several years. Her career in the medical field began in the nursery at Mesquite Memorial Hospital as a nurse's aide, then continued at the Mesquite Medical Center where she worked for Dr. Joey Pirrung. She finished her career as a school nurse for the Mesquite Independent School District from 1976 – 1997.
She retired once, hated it, and went back to work for MISD for two more years. Even after retiring officially, she continued to work part-time, assisting with school hearing screenings and serving as the nurse at UIL marching band competitions and football games.
During her lifetime she was an active member of Liberty Baptist Church and First Baptist of Mesquite, Naomi Class. One of her greatest joys was serving others. During her retirement years, she volunteered for over 18, 000 hours at Sharing Life Community Outreach and received the Lifetime Service Award from the President of the United States.
She was preceded in death by Richard Motley, her husband of 25 years; Otis "Bussy" Coats, husband of 19 years; parents, Joe and Ruby Box; sister, Vay Nations and husband, U.B.; daughter, Jerrie Motley Smith; sons, H.R. Motley and Tom Sawyer; daughter-in-law, Janice; and grandson, Wayne Neal.
Her life will be remembered and celebrated by her children and their spouses, David and wife, Becky, Joe, Sam and wife, Brenda, Becky and husband, Charles Grisham, and daughter-in-law, Nancy Motley; grandchildren and their spouses, Martha Pulatie and husband, James, Robert Motley, Matt Motley and wife, Erika, Jason Motley, Jill Benefield and husband, Brandon, Layne Cawthon and husband, John, Blake Watts and husband, Joel, Amanda Voie and husband, Chris, Michael Motley, Travis Motley, Tommy Rosenbalm, Chris Rosenbalm and wife, Britnie, Dixie Adcock and husband, Dennis, Dennis Sawyer and wife, Sherrie and, David Neal. She had 17 great-grandchildren, another on the way, 1 great-great-grandchild and many friends who felt like family.
At Sammie's request, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church Benevolent Fund at 127 Kimbrough, Mesquite, Texas, 75149 or to Sharing Life Community Outreach at 3544 E. Emporium Circle, Mesquite, Texas, 75150.
