Mrs. Speed was born March 15, 1922 in Bell County, Texas, the youngest of seven children in a close-knit Texas farm family. She grew up during the Depression, graduating from Belton High School and a Houston, Texas business school.
She began her career as an office worker during World War II, meeting Staff Sgt. Lehman T. Speed in 1945 while working at McCloskey General Hospital in Ft. Hood, Texas. They married in October 1945 and marked their 52nd wedding anniversary just a few days before his death in 1997.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she served as president of the Gussie Scales Sunday School Class until her recent illness.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathryn (Kay) Speed-Kelly of Toronto, Ontario (Canada); a son, Gary N. Speed of Little Rock; three siblings, Annelle Pittman of Dallas, and Ruth Brooker and Frederick Nibling, both of Temple, Texas; two grandchildren, Kirstin Kelly of Toronto and Albert Speed of Little Rock; and two step-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at Roller-McNutt Funeral Home in Conway. The Rev. Dee Edwards will lead a brief graveside service for family and close friends at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 13, 2000 at Crestlawn Memorial Park east of Conway.
Afterward, the family invites all friends and family to join them for a celebration of Lou Speed's life at 11:00 a.m. in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church of Conway at 1610 Prince Street. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church.
