Names without a Stone: James Madison and Nancy J (THOMPSON) ENNIS

James Madison ENNIS was born in Arkansas November 1845 per the 1900 Williamson County Texas census. His early years have been hard to trace with certainty (all info is from family researchers unless otherwise noted), but one story is that his parents were Rev. John Riley ENNIS and Susannah (AARON) ENNIS, both of whom were killed by the "Tom Beard Gang" for being Southerners. Rev. John Riley ENNIS and Susannah (AARON) ENNIS did certainly have a son named James, but there are two stories about him. One is that James was born in 1846 and supposedly died in 1863 Vicksburg Mississippi. The other story is that their son James is the one buried in Pond Springs Cemetery.

Per my research, James the son of Rev. John Riley ENNIS and Susannah (AARON) ENNIS was born ca. 1838 (not 1846 and not 1848) per the 1850 Benton County Arkansas census. This makes it appear that the James Ennis buried in Pond Springs Cemetery Walden section is NOT the son of Rev. John Riley and Susannah ENNIS. But more research is needed.

What I can say with certainty is that, in 1864, James M. ENNIS married Nancy J. NELSON, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Ann (O'DANIEL) NELSON who are also buried in the Walden section of Pond Springs Cemetery. Nancy was born in Arkansas 28 May 1848, and died in Texas 14 August 1903. In the 1900 Williamson County Texas census, she was the mother of eleven children, eight were living. James died 7 September 1908 and per the 1964 transcription, he is buried in the Walden section of Pond Springs Cemetery [presumably next to his wife] No stones exists for James or Nancy, and no death certificates have been found.

Known children of James Madison and Nancy J. (THOMPSON) ENNIS:

vii. Lena M. ENNIS, born in Arkansas April 1885.

viii. Ida Vestner ENNIS, born in Arkansas 28 October 1887/1888, died 25 June 1964. Married a TURNER. Buried Austin Memorial Park Cemetery, Austin Texas.

ix. Minnie M. ENNIS, born in Arkansas April 1890.

Mr. and Mrs. Ennis appear to be ancestors of many people in the area; in my opinion they deserve a headstone, but we don't know where to put one.
