His post war career kept him is Stowe for about ten years, then took him to Salt Lake City, and later to California.He was the initial one to start the movement to create the present Memorial building to honor Stowe's Civil War veterans, and to serve his native town. Teaming with Healey Ackely, another veteran, and native of the town, these two Patriots saw their endeavor completed, dedicated, and presented to their town in August of 1903.Returning to California, Thomas died in Huntington Beach in 1930. His remains were returned to Stowe, and placed in a niche in the foyer's walls, recognized with a copper plaque.
