Early Life: Joyce was born April 23, 1928, in Heber City, Utah. She grew up in Park City, Utah, on a dairy ranch with her parents Kenneth and Grace Hicken Mills and her sisters, Madelyn and Barbara. She graduated from Marsac Elementary School and Park City High School at which she received a scholarship to BYU of $25!
Life's Work/Service/Interests: Joyce graduated from BYU in Sociology/Psychology following which she worked for P.E. Ashton car dealership in Provo, Utah, and later for Salt Lake County as secretary to Commissioner George Romney. Joyce realized that she could not do the kind of work she desired in social work unless she earned a Master's Degree; so she did - at the University of Denver. From there, she went to Chicago for three years to work at Jewish Children's Bureau. Finally, it was just too cold in Chicago, so Joyce transferred to Marin County, California, where she worked as a Social Worker and instructor of students of Social Work at UCLA. Eventually, her childhood roots brought her back to Utah where she worked for Granite School District as a counselor at Granite Park Jr. High and became part of administration as coordinator of Elementary School Counselors. Everywhere Joyce lived, she made close and lasting friends. Everyone who knows Joyce loves spending time with her whether at home, on vacation or at her beloved cabin in Kamas. Joyce C. Mills died March 20, 2014, one month before her 86th birthday.
