John, who worked as a house carpenter, married Mary Catherine Schafer in Nebraska in 1886. They had two children, Harry and Mabel, before her suicide in 1895. He then married Iva Morse, with whom he had at least four children: Walter, Charles, Ruth and an infant boy.
In 1917 John obtained 160 acres of farmland in San Bernardino County, under the terms of the Homestead Act of 1862. His son Harry, and friend Walter Knott, obtained adjoining parcels. Walter and his wife Cordelia went on to fame as the founders of Knott's Berry Farm in Orange County, California.
