William was the son of Lee and Anna Brooks Allen and the grandson of Willis and Mary Smith Brooks. He had traveled to Cincinnati to work as a boot black. Mr. Brooks was admitted, as a patient, to the Cincinnati Tuberculosis Sanatorium and passed away from the effects of pulmonary tuberculosis twenty-three days later. The physician estimated that he had contracted the disease almost a year prior to his demise.
