James L. was the son of Thomas and Rhoda nee Rogers Pearson. He married twice. He had 7 children by each wife for a total of 14 children. His first wife was Rosetta Emma Branson, dau of Thomas and Pheba Branson. He married Rosetta on 14 Sep 1865 at Lawrence, Douglas Co, KS. His second wife was Emma Elisabeth Bower, the daughter of Abraham and Maria nee Harpham Bower. He married Emma on 14 Nov 1888 at Fort Jones, Siskiyou Co,CA. Rosetta's children were: Joseph R., Frank B. (died infant), Alice M., Thomas B., David J. (died infant), Lincoln L., and James L. Jr. .... Emma's children were: Benjamin, Emma, Carrie, Wake, William, Roosevelt, and Mabel (died in childhood).
