Forney Weekly Tribune, June 8, 1892
Friday about 12 o'clock a courier from the Arkansas neighborhood, who had been dispatched for a physician, reported a serious cutting affray between Andrew Arnold and Jim and Wm. Short. Officers and physicians repaired to the scene of action and found Wm. Short dead and his brother Jim Short seriously stabbed. Andrew Arnold, the person who did the stabbing was found in a field near by and was put under arrest. N. M. Short, a brother of the wounded and dead men was also arrested as an accomplice, they were brought to town, and late in the evening Sheriff Keller, and deputies took them to Kaufman to jail, to await the action of the grand jury which was in session. It has proved quite a task to gain the particulars as to the cause of the difficulty. Some claiming it was justifiable, others claiming it was not. The particulars which we obtained were as follows: The father of the boys owned twenty acres of land which entitled each child, six in number, to one sixth interest. About four or five years ago ill feeling was engendered, but fortunately it was smoothed over. Recently the old gentleman told his son, Will Short to fence a certain amount of it and this he did. Nick Short sent them word he was going to tear the fence a down and Friday he took Andrew Arnold, his hired laborer, over to put his threat into execution. Be meaning epitaphs were passed when the row ensued. Will Short struck Arnold with a large club when Arnold drew a dirk and stabbed three times, once in the left side in the immediate region of the heart, and twice in the right side from the effect he died in a half hour. Jim Short went to part them when Arnold stabbed him several times leaving him in a very
critical condition. Arnold met Ol Thomas in the road and in a very cool manner told him he had a fight with the Shorts and he expected he had killed two of them, he then continued walking until he reached a neighbor with whom he had worked and told him of the difficulty and told him to go over and see about it and tell the officers where he was. Arnold intimated to the officers after he arrest that Nick Short had excited him to __tion and had assured him that he would get him out of it. The dirk used was of the ordinary make having a white bone handle, Nick Short is a man about 50 years old, and has lived here several years. With the exception of being fractious and over bearing he has a fair reputation as a citizen. Jim Short the wounded man has a large family. The one killed was a single man. It was indeed a sad scene witnessed by the officers as they left for town with Nick Short, they met the old man Short who with white locks and feeble step was journeying to the home of his son Jim, who was expected to die, haying?, left lhis son Will, a corpse, and there was his son, Nick under arrest as an accomplice. The whole tragedy is a deplorable affair, however it is done and cannot be undone.

Forney Weekly Tribune, June 15, 1892
The grand jury failed to find a bill of indictment against N. M. Short as an accomplice in the killing of Will Short. An indictment was found against Andrew Arnold for murder.

Forney Weekly Tribune, June 22, 1892
Andrew Arnold charged with killing Wm. Short, near here a short time ago was acquitted last week by the district court. It was proven that the deed was done in self defense. Arnold is now working near Forney.

Forney Weekly Tribune, June 15, 1892
J. E. Short, who was dangerously stabbed by Andrew Arnold last week, is still in a very critical condition and his death would be no great surprise.
