Orrin was the son of Henry Clay and Ruth (Dobson) Dickson. He appears with the family in the 1880 U. S. Census for DeRoane, Hempstead, Arkansas, with his parents and two surviving siblings. Due to the fact that Orrin, as well as his brother Otis, mainly used only his middle name during his lifetime, there has arisen a question among family researchers as to whether his first name is Theadore or George.
Henry's and Ruth's first born, William Henry Dickson, only lived a little over a month and is buried in Shiloh Cemetery, Lamentine County, Columbia, Arkansas. Including William, Orrin had four siblings.
On 21 April 1897in Hope, Hempstead County, Arkansas, Orrin married Elizabeth Odessa Howell, the daughter of Humphrey Posey Howell and Elizabeth California (Blanchard) Howell. This marriage produced three children: Stella, Howell, and Charles Dickson.
