Margaret, known as Madge, was the daughter of George and Sarah Metcalfe and also had a sister, Sarah Ann, who was two years her junior. In 1881, when she was twenty years old, she was working as a draper's saleswoman, and three years later married Arthur Jefferson, who was also known as A.J. The couple went into the theatre business and had to travel often because of their shows. Margaret was an actress and Arthur was a theatre manager and an actor, as well as being very skilled at make-up and all other things theatrical. When they had to go on the road, they would leave their children in the care of her mother in Ulverston. Her mother's house was also where Margaret gave birth to her children. By the early Aughts the family had moved their operations from Ulverston to Glasgow, where Arthur now owned the Metropole Theatre. Together they had five children, four boys and one girl, Gordon, Arthur, Jr., Beatrice, Sydney, and Everett. Her second-born child would grow up to become the famous comedian Stan Laurel. She passed away suddenly at the end of 1908, not yet even fifty years old.Mother of legendary comic actor Stan Laurel and first wife of Arthur Jefferson.
She was an actress. She and Arthur were married in 1884 and had five children: Gordon, Stanley, Beatrice, Edward and Sydney. She died of illness.
