Mabel Amery, age 99, a resident of Braymer, Missouri, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Golden Age Nursing Home, Braymer, Missouri.

Mabel was born the daughter of David Pearl and Martha Elizabeth "Madge" (Baker) Hoover on August 20, 1914, in Stet, Missouri. She was the last surviving child. She was raised on a farm in Stet, Missouri, community and kiddingly called "Coot" by siblings.

Mabel graduated in 1933 from Stet High School, where she played on the competitive basketball team on a dirt court. She was the oldest living Stet High School graduate. Mabel attended Warrensburg Teachers College, and taught at Brady School, a one room country school, for two years.

She was united in marriage to Samuel John Amery on April 21, 1934. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1973. They lived in the Low Gap Community until moving to Braymer, Missouri, in 1945.

Mabel was a childhood member of the Bethany Church of the Brethren. The Amery family united with the Low Gap Baptist Church, and later the First Baptist Church of Braymer, where they served faithfully and actively.

For twenty years, Mabel was merchandise buyer for the Amery General Store in Braymer. She was active in Braymer School activities, Low Gap Bridge Club, P.E.O., a fifty year member of Order of the Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron.

Her wit, chatty hospitality, and hand crafted quilts given to family and community newborns will be sadly missed.

Survivors include one son, John Gordon Amery and wife Bonnie of Elsberry, Missouri; one grandson, Dr. John Henry Austin Amery and wife Jasmin of O'Fallon, Missouri; one granddaughter, Shirley Dee Ann Jennings and husband Mark of Rochester, Washington; and four great granddaughters, Samantha Ann and Martina Dee Jennings and Elaine Marie and Julia Madelynn Amery. She is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews, Louise Young, Dorthea Cavanaugh, and Lois Burnham and family; and Wesley and Terry Toomay and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Samuel; two brothers, Herbert and Merle Hoover; and two sisters, Thelma Kavanaugh and Kathryn Toomay.

Funeral services were held at Lindley Pitts Funeral Home, Braymer, Missouri, on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m with Rev. Anderson officiating.
