Bernard J. "Bernie" Dehner, 82, of Winona died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare in Winona. Bernard Joseph was born Sept. 24, 1920, in Burlington, Iowa, to Leo and Celestine (Miller) Dehner. He graduated from St. John's High School in Burlington and attended St. Benedict's College in Atchison, Kan. On Nov. 25, 1943, he married Mary Ann Lammers in Fort Madison, Iowa. She preceded him in death April 23, 1989.

Bernie was employed by Schaeffer Pen Co., Fort Madison, Iowa, and Tonka Toys, Mound, Minn. After retiring in 1985, he moved to Winona. He was a member of Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, Knights of Columbus and the Aeromodelers Flying Club, all of Winona. He also received the Paul Harris Fellow award from the Winona Rotary Club. He was an active volunteer and leader for both Junior Achievement and Boy Scouts.

He is survived by his five children, Mark (Marilyn) Dehner of Louisville, Ky., James Dehner of Lane, Kan., Bernard (Linda) Dehner Jr. of Atchison, Kan., Bonnie (Tim) McBeth of Winona and Donald (Nancy) Dehner of Le Claire, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Father Eugene Dehner OSB of Atchison, Kan., Lambert (Rita) Dehner of Brockton, Mass., Father Phillip Dehner, OSF of Conyers, Ga., and Ray (Jane) Dehner of Albuquerque, N.M.; and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Ann; a grandson; one brother, Leo Dehner; and two sisters, Mary Catherine McNasser and Sister Ada Dehner.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday, June 27, at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, with the Rev. John M. Sauer officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Winona. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., today, June 26, at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, Winona, and one hour prior to the Mass Friday at the church. There will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Winona Area Hospice or the American Diabetes Association. Funeral arrangements are being made by Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Winona.
