Holly Springs - WILLIAM CALVIN AKINS. Born: April 18, 1926 in Ripley, MS, son of Carl and Nadine Akins, died July 11, 2011 in Holly Springs, MS. Married to Helen Margaret Coker on August 29, 1951 (d.2010) while attending Southwestern at Memphis. The two surviving children of the marriage are Elizabeth Akins Pritchard of Germantown, TN and William David Akins of Long Island, NY. Later in life Bill married Katherine H. Fisher of Louisville, KY (d.2004). Bill earned his Baccalaureate Degree in vocal music from Southwestern at Memphis (Rhodes) and Masters Degree from Columbia University, NYC. Bill's life was all about music! A tenor soloist specializing in oratorio, opera, and liturgical music, he was a retired music teacher in NY and Memphis schools. Bill was known for his annual school production of Amahl and the Night Visitors, which delighted both children and parents alike, and well known for his public productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. There will be a visitation on Thursday, July 14 from 1-3 p.m. at the Holly Springs Funeral Home, with a graveside service at 3 p.m. in Hillcrest Cemetery in Holly Springs.
