By 1901 he and his brother George had moved to Bromley in Kent, both were employed as ironmonger's assistants. In 1905 he married Harriet Amy Cakebread and they had one child, a daughter.
William enlisted in the West Kent Reserves on 13th January 1911, he was 5ft 9¾ins tall.
On 29th October he embarked for India where he died of heat stroke on 14th May 1915, his wife was awarded a pension of 17/-6d per week.
