Wanda Marie (nee Karbo) Hanigan, of Las Vegas, passed away March 18, 2014. Born May 28, 1921, in Minneapolis, to Anna and Michael Karwanaki, Wanda was a shy little girl with blonde hair, blue eyes and the kindest nature God has given to a person. Wanda grew up in the Polish section of Minneapolis with a good Catholic upbringing. She always claimed the only thing she ever did wrong was to take a quart of ice cream out to the dirt lot near her house and eat it all by herself. Her first job was at Dayton's Department Store in Minneapolis as a lingerie model. At the age of 18, she and her sister, Rosa Lee, left to see the world. Wanda worked for the civil service during World War II in many places including San Diego, San Antonio, Boston, and Florida. She eventually ended up at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, N.M., where she was assigned to the secretarial pool and met the young new boss, Major Ed Hanigan. A year later Wanda and Ed married and they began their Air Force life and family together. Their military assignments took them many places including, California, Alabama, the Pentagon, and Hawaii. Ed passed away in 1967 at the age of 45. Wanda then had four children ranging in age from 7 to 16 to rear, which she did with devotion and unwavering love. She moved the family to Las Vegas in 1969. Because Wanda loved to travel her friends called her "Wander." After her first grandson was born, she decided that the Hawaiian name "Tutu" was a much better word for grandma so she became Tutu to everyone she met. Wanda was preceded in death by her husband, Colonel Edward J. Hanigan Jr.; mother, Anna Karwanaki; father, Michael Karwanaki; brothers, Wally Karbo, Eddie Karbo and Mike Karbo; and her sister, Rosa Lee Brooks. She is survived by her four children, Ann King, Mary Dickerson, Edward Hanigan and Robert Hanigan; and four grandchildren, Ryan King, Michael Dickerson, Kevin Dickerson and Lisa Dickerson. She will be greatly missed by all. The family thanks the kind staff at Vintage Park at San Martin for taking such good care of their mother. A Mass will be heard for Wanda at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, March 27, at the Shrine of The Most Holy Redeemer, 55 E. Reno Ave., Las Vegas. Interment will follow at Palm Valley View Memorial Park, 7600 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89123. Reception will be held immediately thereafter at Panevino, 246 Via Antonio Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119.
