U.S. Congressman. He engaged in mercantile pursuits, was the clerk in the city office of the recorder at Warren, Pennsylvania in 1838 and studied law at Warren Academy, (1839-40). He also was the first president of the Conewango Valley Railroad Company in 1861 and president of the Warren Savings Bank (1870-77). In 1877 he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877-March 3, 1879); elected to the Forty-seventh Congress, serving until 1879 and elected to the Fifty-first Congress in 1889, serving until his death.
